» Reigning MVP Ovechkin tops East All-Star roster (AP)

Alex Ovechkin finally got his All-Star invitation. Less than a week after Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau called Ovechkin's omission from the Eastern Conference's starting lineup "dumb," the reigning NHL MVP was among 15 players picked Thursday to fill out the roster for the All-Star game on Jan.

» Maple Leafs Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Maple Leafs seem better off without defenseman Bryan McCabe, at least in terms of avoiding public distractions.

The former NHL all-star with the Leafs returned for the first time on Tuesday night with the Florida Panthers, having been almost run out of town after fans and media used his big contract and low production as a lightning rod for criticism of the club's three-year absence from the playoffs. McCabe spent eight years as a Leaf and placed sixth in club history in points by a defenseman with 297.

McCabe and Pavel Kubina, who assumed McCabe's spot as the big-shot power-play force, are almost even in goals and points this season even though the latter missed 10 games with a back injury.

Andrei Markov and Robert Lang scored power-play goals 2:08 apart to break open a tight game in the third period and lift the Montreal Canadiens to a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night. Lang made it 5-3 with 4:31 remaining during 4-on-4 play and finished his second NHL hat trick with an empty-netter.

» Maple Leafs acquire Brad May from Ducks (AP)

The Maple leafs acquired hard-hitting forward Brad May from the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday for a conditional 2010 sixth-round draft pick. The deal was Brain Burke's first since becoming Toronto's president and general manager in late November. "Brad will provide character, toughness, and he is a proven winner," Burke said in a statement.

» Panthers top Leafs 4-2 (AP)

Florida Panthers center Shawn Matthias takes to the air as he passes in front of Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Vesa Toskala during the third period of an NHL hockey game in Toronto on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009.

Bryan McCabe helped deflect the boos of the Toronto Maple Leafs' fans from him to their own team. McCabe, a former Leafs defenseman who was traded to Florida in the offseason, had an assist on the game's first goal and the Florida Panthers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Tuesday night. "They were really flat," McCabe said.
