Top-ranked Rafael Nadal was eliminated from the Qatar Open on Thursday, while Roger Federer advanced to the semifinals of the tuneup for the Australian Open. Nadal lost to Gael Monfils of France 6-4, 6-4, and Federer saved three set points to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-2, 7-6 (6). The Swiss star trailed 5-1 and 6-3 in the tiebreaker, reeling off five straight points to win.

Former No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo upset top-seeded Ana Ivanovic in the Brisbane International quarterfinals Thursday, her first victory over a top 10 player in two years. Mauresmo, the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion in 2006, dropped serve only once while breaking Ivanovic five times to advance to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

The Russian brother and sister combination of Dinara Safina and Marat Safin won the mixed doubles match against France on Thursday to secure a place in the final against Slovakia at the Hopman Cup. Safina defeated Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-2 before her brother lost to Gilles Simon 7-6 (5), 6-3. In the deciding mixed doubles, Russia beat France 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the final of the team competition.

Russia's Elena Dementieva beat Shahar Peer of Israel 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday to reach the semifinals of the ASB Classic. The top-seeded Dementieva, ranked No. 4, dropped her serve in the opening game but broke fifth-seeded Peer to level at 2-2 in what seemed a close match. But she then reeled off nine straight games to take charge of the match and to improve to 5-1 in her career against Peer.

Nikolay Davydenko will miss the Australian Open because of a heel injury that bothered him last season and has caused "unbearable" pain the past two weeks.
